During the time I spent living in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, just 5 miles from the velodrome in Trexlertown in the mid-to-late 90's, I was fortunate enough to become friends with some really talented athletes. Many of these athletes competed on the national and international level, and the experience I gained during those years helped improve my performance greatly.
But the thing I remember most and carried with when I left Pennsylvania for Maine, was how exceptional the developmental program in "T-Town" is. And later when I posed the question of what I could do to contribute to the sport of cycling, it became clear to me that helping develop current athletes and introducing new athletes to a sport I have come to love was the obvious next step. So, in 2001 I started working with athletes in southern Maine. And since then I have worked with athletes around the country, and around the world.
Being a coach is about more than training schedules and telling an athlete what workouts to do on a given day. Bike racing is a complex sport that is as much, if not more, about playing a smart game and outperforming the competition on many levels, not just riding them off your wheel. The path to top performances starts months, even years before, by being honest with yourself, developing focused goals, targeting your weaknesses and maximizing your strengths.
When I work with an athlete I look at each as an individual. There is no such thing as a cookie cutter solution that will deliver every athlete to peak performance. Every athlete has different schedules, different family and work commitments and most important, different personalities. What motivates and drives one person to succeed won't necessarily do the same for another. So it is important that I get to know each of my athletes as a person and design a personalized development plan for each.
One of the ways I work to ensure each athlete gets the attention they should, is by limiting the number of clients I carry at any given time during the training year. I will not carry more than 20 clients at a time, and only 8 of those can be on my Level 1 coaching programs. I have found that working in this way has helped me deliver the highest quality coaching experience to my clients.
I also try to develop the whole athlete, by putting equal importance on developing the mind, technical skills, as well as the physical engine.
